As you can see in these pictures, the current mosque is in a bad state and very overcrowded. Also shown is the assistant imam Muhammad Lamine Elhaibe.

Project update

Since Mosque Appeal began running in 2006, we have — by the grace of Allah — helped to construct 4 mosques for communities in Nepal, Gambia and Guinea Bissau.

This month we are hoping to fulfil our duty to the Muslim community of Mauritania and raise the remaining £6000 to see this much-needed mosque to completion insha’Allah.

As ever the need for this mosque is essential for the community. We recently received a letter from the Assistant Imam of the village, Muhammad Lamine Elhaibe, who wrote:

I write to appeal to you for the construction of our mosque which is not strong and is almost falling apart. Every time I enter the mosque, I am always worried that it can fall on us at any time during the prayer.

The need for a mosque

The photographs below of the existing mosque with its extremely basic facilities tell a story in and of themselves. This region of Hasitillah, Mauritania was selected on the ground of where the greatest need was. The people of the vicinity suffer from a lack of area where they are able to access knowledge of Islam directly leaving a damaging impact on families and communities as a whole.  The existing mosque also lacks any regular classes, activities or events for the Muslims to convene and keep abreast of issues which concern the whole communities.

It is hoped this mosque will play a vital role in networking and welcoming the local Muslims of Hasitillah and Nema town. The Muslim community are in desperate need of a place to attain regular and reliable Islamic knowledge through lessons and classes and a place where they can learn, grow and feel the benefits of being part of a wider community. This mosque will, insha’Allah, prove to be an invaluable centre of knowledge and take its place at the heart of the Muslim community.

This project is the most eagerly awaited and needed projects Mosque Appeal has come to know of and it is hoped this is extending to neighbouring villages suffering from the same lack of facilities and communal benefits.
